True to form, I made this a couple times and loved it, and got it just right.  Annnnd then promptly forgot to write down the amounts I used, went on vacation, and then had to go out and get more blood oranges to try again.

The main thing was the ratio of ingredients, since this is kind of a “level up” of my regular amaretto sour.   This requires a higher ratio of the blood orange juice, as it’s more subtle and less tart than other citrus fruits.

Something you should be aware of is how much variance there is in flavor between different types of blood orange.  The tiny darker blood oranges I got at Trader Joe’s (more like mandarin/cutie size) didn’t have nearly the punch as the bigger ones I get at Kroger (that kind of look like regular oranges on the outside).

Mixing this blood orange amaretto sour up is super easy.  You just add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker and fill two-thirds of the way with ice.

Shake for 15 to 20 seconds, TASTE IT (to see if the balance is right, if it needs more simple syrup or lemon juice, etc.), then strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish.

I love the mellower, slightly sweeter citrus flavor that blood oranges bring to things, and in this case I feel like it pairs perfectly with the sweet almond liqueur and a strong-but-smooth bourbon.

Prep Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 2 minutes

This blood orange amaretto sour is a whole other level...tart, sweet, citrusy, a little boozy, and with that almond hit. It's also SO easy and so pretty! This is a delicious cocktail any night of the week.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces of good bourbon (~90-proof)
  • 2 ounces (or more) of fresh blood orange juice
  • 1 to 1 1/2 ounces of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ounce of amaretto liqueur (I prefer Disaronno)
  • 1 teaspoon of simple syrup (if desired)
  • Garnish: thin slice of blood orange or an amarena cherry

Instructions

  1. Add the lemon juice, blood orange juice, amaretto, bourbon, and a small amount of simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Fill the shaker two-thirds full with ice and shake for 15 to 20 seconds (to super-chill and dilute). TASTE IT to see if the balance is right, if it needs more simple syrup or lemon juice, etc.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish.

Notes

I have found that the blood oranges that are tiny (like cutie size) and darker do not have as punchy or tart of a flavor, and I needed a lot more juice when I used them. If you can find them, the bigger blood oranges that look kind of like regular oranges on the outside are more flavorful.
